jağın
/dʒaʁɯn/ · plural jağınla
1. whim, caprice, antic, stubborn temper; unruly behavior in a person or animal — Common in sabiy jağın 'a child's whims'. With tutarğa it means that a fit of temper comes over someone. Also said of a horse that balks or acts up. Tenishev and Suyunchev 1989 marks this meaning Balkar, but the other dictionaries give it without a mark.
- sabiy jağın — a child's whims
- sabiy jağın etedi — the child is being capricious
- atnı jağını bardı — the horse has a stubborn temper
- alğa atlamay, jağın etib — not stepping forward, acting up
2. advocate, defender; intercession, defense, taking someone's side — Often used with eterge and bolurğa to mean take someone's side or stand up for someone, as in jağın etme 'don't take his side'. Tenishev and Suyunchev 1989 and Guzeev 1996–2005 mark this meaning Karachay.
- ol aŋa jağın etedi — he takes his side
- jağın etme! — don't take his side!
- jağın bolma! — don't stand up for him!
- sen aŋa jağın etib aytasa — you are speaking in his defense
- qarnaşıŋa jağın bolğanıŋı açıq körgüztgense — you have openly shown that you took your brother's side

The overlap in the last rows is real, not a mistake: jağınları can mean "his / her whims", "their whim", or "their whims" — context decides.
