1. almasty, a demon of mountain folklore pictured as an old woman with long tangled hair; also a house spirit or wood goblin — In tales it is used to frighten children. As a house spirit the name is taboo and speakers avoid saying it aloud, saying üy iesi "master of the house" instead. Guzeev 1996–2005 marks this form Karachay and refers it to almostu; Nevruz 1991 also gives the form almaslı.
