ua / a
/ua/, /a/
1. but, whereas (contrasting with what was said before) — Written ua after a vowel and a after a consonant, as in alay a and sen a. It does not open its clause but follows the first word or phrase of it, the one being contrasted: seni ua körmedim 'but I didn't see you'.
- men jazama, sen a oquysa — I am writing, whereas you are reading
- men keteme, ol a qaladı — I am leaving, whereas he is staying
- bügün tabmadım, tambla ua tabarma — I didn't find it today, but I will find it tomorrow
- seni ua körmedim — but I did not see you
- endi ua şahardabız — but now we are in the town
- bılayda ua jaŋıldıŋ — here, however, you were mistaken
- halisi ua qolaysızdı — but his behavior is poor
- ol a alay tüldü — but that is not so
2. and (adding a further statement) — Like the contrastive use, it follows the first word or phrase of the clause it adds, as in ızı bla ua 'and after him'.
- ızı bla ua - talay adam — and after him, several people
- tübünde ua jaşil özenle — and at its foot, green valleys
- ata sözü ua menŋe bağalıdı — and a father's word is precious to me
