kerkme
/kerkme/ · plural kerkmele
a notch, a nick (cut into wood, a stick, etc.) — Tenishev and Suyunchev 1989 marks it as a Karachay word. Notches were cut as tally marks, one for each year for example, and as decoration on wooden vessels.
- jıl sayın bir kerkme salama — every year I cut one notch
- kerkmele salınŋan ağaç ayaq — a wooden bowl with notches cut in it
- tayaqğa kerkme saldı — he cut a notch in the stick

The overlap in the last rows is real, not a mistake: kerkmeleri can mean "his / her notches", "their notch", or "their notches" — context decides.
